CCP Announce EVE: Valkyrie Will Be Getting Bundled In With Every Oculus Rift Pre-Order
The arrival of VR is becoming all the more real with the announcement that CCP’sEVE: Valkyrie will be getting bundled in with every pre-order of the Oculus Rift. The space shooter spin-off of CCP’s long-running MMO series has been one of the strongest performers at VR demo events, capitalising on the strengths of the headset and impressing Oculus into picking up publishing duties.
Plenty of games have difficulty integrating their systems and methods of locomotion into virtual reality, but sitting in a spaceship’s cockpit is an easy to thing to wrap you head around. Moving the ship rather than yourself should help new users acclimatise, and Oculus is clearly hoping its appeal will help sell the Rift to the masses.
"We want to be the Halo or Mario for the Oculus," said Eve Valkyrie executive producer Owen O’Brien earlier this year, revealing the studio’s lofty ambitions for the title.
“EVE: Valkyrie is one of the most anticipated virtual reality games, and one of the first true VR games to go into development,” agrees Oculus creator Palmer Luckey, unsurprisngly. “It perfectly captures the promise of immersive gaming, shooting you into a sci-fi adventure as you pilot a spaceship in search of combat. Battling your friends (and enemies) in multiplayer space dogfights is the ultimate VR thrill, and we’re excited to partner with CCP to bring this experience to Rift owners everywhere.”
Fingers crossed then that EVE: Valkyrie ends up being the perfect showcase for new VR users. At the moment though we still don’t know one jot about the launch price of the Oculus Rift or even its launch date, aside from a tentative Q1 2016 announcement.
Can EVE: Valkyrie be the must-have title to drive VR adoption? Or is the genre too niche to attract the masses?
