Reports Of Intel Skylake CPUs Bending Under Pressure Of Aftermarket Coolers

It seems as if Skylake users are experiencing some unexpected side effects with Intel’s next-generation CPUs. Intel’s new processors make use of a thinner substrate to produce the die, and this has resulted in some aftermarket coolers physically bending the CPU and even causing damage to the motherboard.

The thinner wafer used in the Skylake chips is just too weak to support many coolers, whose clamping mechanisms can cause the motherboard contacts to bend or even break off completely. If you’ve got an Intel Skylake CPU then it’s definitely going to be worth having a poke around and seeing if there’s any damage. Any additional movement or shocks to your PC is likely to make the situation worse, so it’s better to check out sooner rather than later.

Skylake vs Broadwell Thinner Substrate

It’s difficult to ascertain with whom the blame lies here. Intel created the Skylake chips using a thinner substrate, and they do work precisely as intended. The CPU coolers themselves were designed to be used with thicker CPUs, landing the onus on the end user if they attached an unsuitable cooler to their Skylake processor.
A number of cooler manufacturers have weighed in on the problems, with some, such as Arctic and Thermaltake, assuring users that their coolers are totally compatible with Skylake. Others, such as Scythe and EK Water Blocks, are advising caution, with Scythe admitting "in some cases (eg shipping or relocation) it may result in damage to CPU and motherboard when the PC is exposed to stronger shocks.
If you are affected then your best chance is to get straight in touch with your CPU cooler manufacturer and see what they can do to help you out. Fingers crossed they’ve got some systems in place, but don’t count on any replacements for broken and bent components.
